Starting Over

The trend of people who may have been in the work force for 40 years suddenly starting a new career at 55 or over is exploding as baby boomers move toward retirement age. There have always been older workers who try something new but this trend has hit new heigths in the baby boomer lifestyle. So you might be wondering what makes baby boomers want to start new careers so late in life.
Contributing to this phenomenon is a change of business practices in the last few decades. In our parents working years, the company were loyal to employees and in return the employees were loyal and worked at the same company for 35-45 or more years, got that gold watch and retired with a solid retirement package. That formula just isn`t working in this day and age.
Employer supported retirement plans have become a thing of the past. Savings for retirement is much harder as the financial demands of life consumes the pulk of our income. Today's worker will change employers seven to ten times during his or her working years. So the concept of working on into what used to be called the golden years is now a given for most.
Early in life the majority of people find a job so that they can pay the bills and raise the kids. They don't follow their dream at that time. So when the kids are off to their new careers, the house is paid off and life has settled down, many baby boomers see an opportunity to finally throw off that mundane old job and go after their dream.
It`s great to see someone approaching their golden years setting the pace and not settling for anything less than recapturing their dream by launching a new career. Who can fault boomers for wanting the kind of gratification that comes from a career that fulfills their passions? So may God bless the late in life boomers who have grabbed the brass ring in their golden years. They will be an inspiration for all of as we march into and thru our golden years.
